Preston Loeb was born c. 1870 to a well-off clan of English Jews: his family emigrated to the U.S.A when he was a child. As an adult he graduated law school and built a successful practice in New Orleans. He never married, but maintained an active social life. Amongst his circle of acquaintances was a sultry and mysterious foreigner named Diamanda Soledad. When Preston fell fatally ill during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918, Diamanda revealed herself on his deathbed and offered him the Embrace.
Soon after, however, Diamanda fell to a band of vampire hunters and Preston was cast adrift without guidance or protection. Another Mekhet (of the disdained Morbus bloodline) known as ‘Bronze John’ stepped up and completed the young vampire’s education. Preston formally joined the Ordo Dracul (Diamanda’s covenant) in 1927. He met and befriended Svoboda as she passed through New Orleans in 1938, and accepted her invitation to Anchorage in 1980.
Preston is a rarely-seen senior partner of Loeb, Blum, and Kowalski, one of Alaska’s most prestigious law-firms. Sam ‘The Demon’ Kowalski is his ghoul, and Preston is widely supposed to have taught him some basic Majesty to improve his courtroom ability. Many of Anchorage’s Kindred turn to LBK when they want legal aid.
Preston has acquired considerable influence with the local and state police, as well as the DA’s office. He trades on favors, anonymously helping to solve cases (easy with high Auspex and Obfuscate powers): in return many detectives and prosecutors are willing to occasionally turn a blind eye to certain evidence or perform perfunctorily when asked. To back up these ‘carrots’ he holds many ‘sticks’ as well in the form of various secrets and dirt laundry.
Because his and Delgado’s spheres of influence often conflict, the two vampires are on less than cordial terms.
Preston maintains a luxurious town-house haven, maintained by his live-in housekeeper and ghoul Virginia Dubert. He is known to often feed from former clients of his law firm.
